Last year we sponsored Eskmill Football Club under 16s but as the team disband in the current form we needed find a new team to sponsor. Step in Beechwood Girls under 11s team thanks to our accountant.

David and I went to visit the girls training a couple of weeks ago at Gyle Public Park in Edinburgh. I think the pink with black kit looks very smart, even the boys in the office said they’d wear it.

Thanks to Mark who does a great job down at the Gyle Public Park for the girls and the other teams.

Beechwood FC launched its very first Girls side in March 2011. The team are playing 7 a sides as under 11s at the moment and have been working hard and doing extremely well. The Girls are currently Directeded by Mark Campbell, will be Managed by Louis Douglas, and coached by Martin Gribbon and other members of our coaching team. Last year we sponsored Eskmill Football Club under 16s. Couple of us from the office were asked to make up the numbers and play in the end of season game, kind of Lads v Dads match.

The expectation at the beginning of the match was the score was going to be into double figures for the boys! Luckily with three goals from the Dunedin IT the game end in 4-1.

Well done to the lads who finished 2nd in the league this season.

Last year I wrote a guide on how to remove viruses from your home PC. Here’s what to do if you still can’t get rid of them!

1 – Turn off “System Restore” – Sometimes viruses hide themselves in system restore and can come back after being deleted.

2 – Boot it into safe mode - Always the best place to start, reboot computer and press that F8 button on start up, then start the removal process.

3 – Run System Configuration Utility – Run “msconfig” via the start menu and disable any start up programs that look suspicious, be careful. CCleaner might also help and Spybot also has tool called RunAlyzer.

4 – Rename anti spyware applications – If you’re having problems installing your favourite anti-spyware program because of the virus then try renaming them.

5 – McAfee Stinger – McAfee release a free program (Stinger) for removing certain viruses.

6 – Clean the disk – Sometimes running disk cleaner can to speed up the time AV and Spyware scan times.

7 – Spyware Apps & Tools - Try MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware, HijackThis, SpyBot, antimalware and SpywareBlaster

8 – Anti Virus Apps – Microsoft Security Essentials, AVG Free and Avira – remember not all at once!

9 – Create a bootable CD or USB Key – AVG provide a free bootable linux distro or you can try BartPE boot disk and remove infected files and folders.

10 – Command prompt virus scanner – Download VIPRE, install and boot into safe mode (F8) and select “Networking with command prompt”. Then run scanner via the command prompt.

11 – What’s running on your computer – HijackThis generates an in depth report of registry and file settings from your computer for the real expert.

12 – Rootkits – Try these rootkits F-Secure BlackLight, Prexv, Sophos Anti-Rootkit

Today I was very pleased to watch Eskmill FC Penicuik play in their new kit down in Musselburgh.

We were recently given the opportunity to sponsor the under sixteen’s team for the 2010/11 season and aside from a bit of exposure its nice to play a part in the local community. We wish the team all the best for upcoming season and hope to pop down from time to time.

Quite often clients ask us how to get rid of viruses off their home computer. We’ve found that most of the time you can remove viruses by following these simple steps below. For a business you should really have your IT support company take a look at the problem.

1) Don’t touch anything and reboot your PC into Safe Mode with networking, typically achieved by pressing the F8 button when Windows restarts. More information here

2) Once logged in under safe mode you need to download a copy of Malwarebytes and install it. If you can’t access the internet or the virus is getting in the way of doing so you will need download copy on to USB key on other computer.

3) Once Malwarebytes has been installed and updated its virus definitions, run a full scan and go for cup of coffee.

4) Anything from 30 minutes to two hours Malwarebytes should find some infected objects. Allow the program to clean the computer.

5) Reboot the computer back into safe mode again and repeat the process. Hopefully this time Malwarebytes won’t find anything.

6) Reboot the computer back into normal mode (without press F8) , ensure your current Antivirus product is update and run a full scan.

Prevention

Most viruses come from either email attachments, surfing some slightly dodgy website or Peer to Peer programs such as LimeWire. Typically people buy a computer with McAfee or Norton already installed and think they’ve covered on the antivirus front. Most of the time these are trial editions which only last 30 days or so.

So you can either pay the subscription or download free product (Which won’t give you as much protection as paid products).

Last month one of our longest standing clients, Gravitate HR invited us to a team building day at BlueSky Experiences in Perth.

The weather was great and everyone enjoyed getting out of the office for the day.

I think from the day we learnt that David might have a career in crate building and we might not be the best people to ring when you need to transfer water via a bucket and a piece of string.

Firstly David who many of you have already met is moving to a full time role from next month. David brings a wealth of experience from his senior IT roles at Jenners, RMJM and Onyx. As you can see from the picture above isn’t afraid of getting his hands dirty!

Additionally Paul who I worked with in my last job at Terinea is helping us with a couple of software project over the summer.

Fraser

Lastly Fraser from Fraser Waters Digital has been helping us out with all things web related and additionally is a dab hand with the camera.

Last month we finished investing in a new phone system from Commsworld. This gives us a number of features and flexibility that BT couldn’t provided us with.

This month I’ve been over to Microsoft’s rather nice offices at Waverley Gate for various product demos and gatherings.

So hats tipped to Microsoft Scotland for this.

One of the video’s they showed us was an advert for Microsoft Live Meeting.

But to be honest I found this video below a little funnier. Some bleeped swear words (twice I think) so if you’re easily offend maybe best not otherwise enjoy the future!

I would probably say the most popular guest was definitely Fergus.

When we originally started Dunedin IT we had planned to have a bit of an office opening night but before we knew it, Christmas was already upon us. Then we had a really busy start to the new year with some servers giving up the ghost, client office moves, shed loads of snow and just recently the grounding of the company helicopter due to volcanic dust.

Anyway as a small token of our appreciation and your continued support, we would like to invite you along to Dunedin IT office on Thursday the 20th of May from 1730-20:30 for some drinks and selection of Spanish tapas.

This will be a good chance to meet Marion and David and I’m quite sure make couple of business contacts but most of all have some free drink on us.
