Why organisations need to consider Advanced Cyber Security
Cyber security hasn’t stood still — and neither have criminals. In this short video, Dunedin IT explores how the threat landscape has changed over the past 20 years. We start in the mid-1990s, when most small organisations had little or no fixed internet connectivity and IT security was minimal. As the 2000s arrived, email and websites became essential tools, offices moved online, and basic protections like firewalls, antivirus, and spam filtering became standard. Then everything shifted in 2013 with the rise of ransomware. Cybercriminals began targeting business data rather than individual machines — encrypting it and demanding payment, often using cryptocurrencies. Cybercrime became a serious, organised industry, and as businesses adopted more technology, staff used more devices and company data spread far beyond the office network. The pandemic accelerated remote working, creating new opportunities for attackers and making it clear that the office network alone can no longer protect staff, devices, and data. With emerging technologies like artificial intelligence offering new ways to exploit organisations, modern security needs to evolve again. The takeaway: what protected a business a few years ago may no longer be enough — and organisations need security measures that match today’s risks.
